Fugitive Robert Maday was apprehended this afternoon in West Chicago. It is alleged that he high jacked a car and then robbed a bank (another one - this is his favorite pastime) in Bloomingdale, Illinois earlier in the day. Police report that the suspect robbed a branch of First American Bank, threatening tellers with the claim of a handgun. The weapon was not displayed, no overt violence ensued, and Maday made his getaway on foot.
Maday had escaped from police custody yesterday; they were transporting him to a Rolling Meadows court for sentencing on prior robbery convictions. Authorities today secured the perimeter of the bank's parking lot and stood guard along the side of the building, which was in lockdown until just after noon. A number of schools in the vicinity also locked down to protect students and faculty, as the police continued to search for the armed and potentially dangerous suspect.
It seems a day rarely goes by that we don't hear of some sort of crime. While there is apparently no way to entirely put a stop to this type of frightening activity, we can make the extra effort to protect ourselves. Always be aware of surroundings, keep a reasonably suspicious eye out for people who look like they could pose a danger to you or others and, on the home front, the addition of a house alarm or security system is helpful, too. Better safe than sorry!
